Succulent Care 101: A Beginner's Guide to Happy Succulents

Succulents are beautiful, low-maintenance, and perfect for beginners. Learn the essential care tips to keep your succulents thriving.

Why Everyone Loves Succulents

Succulents have taken the plant world by storm, and for good reason. They're gorgeous, come in an incredible variety of shapes and colors, and they're wonderfully forgiving for new plant parents.

Understanding Your Succulents

Succulents store water in their leaves, stems, or roots — that's what makes them so plump and beautiful. This also means they have very different needs from your typical houseplant.

The Golden Rules of Succulent Care

1. Light is Everything Most succulents want bright, indirect light for at least 6 hours a day. A south or east-facing window is ideal. If your succulent starts stretching (getting tall and leggy), it's reaching for more light.

2. Water Deeply, But Rarely The "soak and dry" method works best:

  • Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom
  • Wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again
  • In summer, this might be every 7-10 days
  • In winter, every 2-3 weeks or even less

3. Well-Draining Soil is Non-Negotiable Regular potting soil holds too much moisture. Use:

  • Commercial cactus/succulent mix
  • Or make your own: 2 parts potting soil + 1 part perlite + 1 part coarse sand

4. Pots with Drainage Holes This is the single most important thing. No drainage = root rot = sad succulent.

Creative Display Ideas

  • Vintage teacups — drill drainage holes for a charming display
  • Old wooden drawers — line with plastic, add drainage, and create a succulent garden
  • Repurposed picture frames — create living wall art
  • Thrift store finds — colanders, bread tins, and old boots all make quirky planters

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Misting instead of watering (succulents hate humidity on their leaves)
  • Using glass containers without drainage
  • Placing in a dark corner
  • Watering on a strict schedule instead of checking the soil

"Succulents are proof that beautiful things can thrive with very little — a lesson for all of us."

Start with an Echeveria or a Jade Plant — they're nearly bulletproof — and grow your collection from there!
